Juan’s a seasoned Geological Engineer with a rich 33-year journey in the oil and gas world. He kicked off his career at PDVSA in Latin America, diving into exploration, micropaleontology, and operations—gaining hands-on experience across the upstream sector.

In 1994, Juan took on a role with Occidental Oil and Gas (OXY) as a Development Geologist, where he made a real impact, helping to boost production in Venezuela. His career then took him to ARCO-BP, with a brief return to Venezuela, before joining LASMO in 1999 to support exploration and field development. The next year, he was promoted as a Senior Sedimentologist and Asset Leader with TOTAL, overseeing an impressive 175 wells in the Orinoco Extra Heavy Oil Belt. He even managed one of the longest horizontal wells at 5,555 feet!

In 2007, Juan brought his expertise to Schlumberger. Working on the Casabe Field, he led the discovery of a new 280 million-barrel field (Casabe South) and played a major role in boosting production from 4,500 to 25,000 barrels per day. Over the years, he took on roles as a Heavy Oil Advisor in Colombia, Principal Geologist in the U.S., and later, Subsurface Manager for an unconventional project in Oman. In Dubai, he also led asset evaluations for projects spanning Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

After wrapping up his time at Schlumberger in 2020, Juan launched his own consulting business in the UAE, evaluating projects in places like Romania, India, Indonesia, and Oman. Most recently, in June 2023, he stepped in as Subsurface Director at Hydrocarbon Finder E&P, playing a key role in the company’s recent revival.

Throughout his career, Juan has honed his skills in geology, reservoir engineering, and asset evaluation, working on projects that range from heavy oil and secondary recovery to exploration and unconventional resources. He’s truly a versatile force in the industry.
